[Seoul National University Siheung Campus Headquarters Start-Up CEO] Jiyoung Kim, CEO of NUSEUM-Lab (Selected for the 2023 Preliminary Entrepreneurship Package)
Introducing 'NUSEUM-Lab,' a new commerce platform providing personalized nutrition information.
After 20 years of research at Seoul National University's laboratories, CEO Jiyoung Kim ventured into entrepreneurship, aiming to create a tailored dietary design platform. NUSEUM-Lab facilitates individuals and their caregivers affected by dietary-sensitive symptoms and conditions to receive personalized ingredient and meal plans, connecting them with commerce, delivery meals, and restaurants to simplify implementation.
Starting as a preliminary start-up team from the Seoul National University Lab of Nutrient Physiology and Pharmacology, NUSEUM-Lab commenced business as a corporation in November this year. CEO Jiyoung Kim (47) stated, "NUSEUM-Lab has initiated pre-orders to provide a higher level of technology for the service launching on February 23, 2024 (nuseum-lab.com)."
"NUSEUM-Lab's service, offering personalized health and nutrition information at the point of purchase for individuals or families, is preparing to address conditions significantly influenced by diet such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, hypercholesterolemia/hypertriglyceridemia, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, food allergies, as well as concerns every parent has regarding their children's neural development and growth. Furthermore, NUSEUM Market is ready for anyone wishing to practice a healthy diet."
The commerce platform NUSEUM Market, aiding in healthy food selection and purchase, offers the most efficient way for customers to form healthy eating habits conducive to managing their health. From a database of 81,000 food nutrition data, 1,839 foods selected for their high nutritional value and applicability to specific health conditions are linked to e-commerce products for immediate purchase. The platform analyzes purchase history to present diversity and nutritional components of food bought by individuals or families. Generative AI is used to explain the physiological functions of purchased foods. NUSEUM Market plans to expand its services by integrating personal body composition analysis, urine metabolites, continuous glucose monitoring, health examination results, genetics, microbiome analysis, etc.
CEO Kim believes that the personalized nutrition information provided by NUSEUM Market at the point of purchase will play a meaningful role in solving human health issues and building a healthier society.
The pre-order for NUSEUM Market serves not only to fund the development, maintenance, and technological advancement of the web app beta service but also to identify potential customers and validate the business hypothesis and decisions. CEO Kim mentioned, "We are creating individualized markets for purchasing customers and improving our services based on their feedback."
"Additionally, we've signed an MOU with Shuttle Delivery and opened NUSEUM Market within their service. Shuttle Delivery is a leading app that delivers a variety of international cuisines from over 1,000 restaurants in Korea, primarily to foreigners, with 90% of its users being non-Koreans. Through this collaboration, we plan to offer Shuttle Delivery's customers the opportunity to choose healthier food options curated by NUSEUM-LAB."
NUSEUM-Lab has also participated in a project to develop a customized protein and nutritional supplement supply machine & service for Gyms, defining the input values such as individual characteristics and needs for the personalized program, and the changes in output according to the input.
"Rather than being competitors in the personalized nutrition market, NUSEUM shares its knowledge as a business partner and collaborator with relevant companies, aiding in each customer's right to health through services based on individual data."
NUSEUM-Lab conducted an online survey with structured questionnaires, introducing NUSEUM's services to 500 families with members suffering from conditions, aiming to resolve their dietary issues. CEO Kim shared insights from the survey, indicating future user intentions.
"According to the 'NUSEUM Market Consumer Response Survey Report' conducted among 500 men and women aged 30-50 with family members suffering from conditions, marketing and promotion targeting based on age show relatively higher interest in the 40s and 50s age groups. Plans to expand channels include pharmacy bag advertising targeting patients, promotions on LinkedIn, Facebook for intellectuals, as well as blogs, Instagram, etc. We are also promoting NUSEUM-Lab's services in gatherings of bio-medical field experts."
Jiyoung Kim, CEO of NUSEUM-Lab, is an expert in the field, having served as a research professor in Lab of Nutrient Physiology and Pharmacology at Seoul National University, and as the organizer of the 2019 and 2020 Seoul National University AI diet symposium, and chairman of the Personalized Nutrition Division of the Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition in 2021 and 2022. NUSEUM-Lab is overseen by Sungmi Yu, team leader responsible for overall management and business support, Hyeonjung Yoon handling design and development, and Youngdeok Kwon, a partner from Pharmple, who collaborates on backend development. Additionally, Hyungil Park, former head of AI division at GS Retail and Chief Strategy Officer at Omnious, advises on business strategy; Yu Kang, professor at Seoul National University's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, provides AI consultation; Beomjo Oh, professor at Seoul National University Boramae Hospital's Department of Family Medicine, offers medical advice; and Jeehee Baek, patent attorney at IP firm IPLytics, consults on intellectual property rights. Nuseum is also receiving marketing advice from Yonghoon Kim, a growth marketing expert with experience leading start-up marketing teams at Goodoc, Pet Friends, and Salaryman's Riches. Furthermore, NUSEUM actively engages with the start-up ecosystem through participation in Seoul National University Campus Town, Seoul National University Entrepreneurship Support Group, SNU Haedong Junior Startup, Seoul National University Biotechnology Joint Research Institute, Seoul Metropolitan Government Gwanak-gu Job Venture Division, TEU (TIDE Envision Univ.), Korea Innovation Center Washington DC, and others.
Regarding future plans, CEO Kim states, "The launch of NUSEUM Market marks the beginning of our full-scale business operations," aiming to "acquire 100,000 subscribers by the end of 2024 to address their dietary problems."
NUSEUM-Lab was selected for the Seoul National University Siheung Campus Headquarters Preliminary Entrepreneurship Package program, designed to support the successful business commercialization of pre-entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and technologies.
